False Evidence Appearing Real

Have you ever want something so badly but were too terrified to actually put everything on the line and pursue it?

You aren’t alone – I scare myself out of things all the time. Can I actually do that run? Can I go to the yoga class because I haven’t been to one in months? Can I go back to school and actually pursue my career dreams? The list goes on and on… and then I tell myself the reality of it is, I can achieve anything I want if I want it badly enough. The only person holding me back from achieving it – is me.

People sit back and don’t take chances out of fear every single day. Fear of failure; fear of the unknown; fear of taking a risk. Fear is a human emotion that we cultivate within ourselves – the more we tell ourselves we cannot do it, the more we actually believe we cannot do it. It’s a perceived obstacle that holds us back and that act of inaction causes more doubt which leads to a larger sense of fear.

Do you see a trend here?

So now that you’ve told yourself that you are the only one holding you back… what are you going to do about it?

I recently stumbled across this blog post, and I highly suggest you read their 5 Incredibly Simple Ways to Overcome Your Fears. I practice all 5 of these in one way or another (yoga is amazing for me!) and I particularly liked when the author said:

“It’s easy to believe that successful people are fearless, but the truth is that they have merely cultivated the courage to get through their fears. You can do the same, if you will just make the decision that you will not accept fears standing in your way.”

“Another side benefit of facing your fears is that you develop courage and self-discipline. This will have tremendous impact in how successful and fulfilled you are in life.”

I’m afraid of many things – every obstacle I achieve started first with fear but then with the overwhelming courage to succeed. I know what I want in life and I’m determined to not let fear get in the way of my success. I realize that I am the one person who can hold me back and I’m the same person who will allow me to succeed, it’s all about courage and determination. My absolute favourite quote for as long as I can remember is from A Return to Love by Marianne Williamson:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant,
gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking
so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously
give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.”

“…And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Now confront and chase that fearful goal you’ve told yourself you can’t achieve – because you can.

What would you attempt if you had no fear?
